Manga Review: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Vol.18 by Koyoharu Gotouge.

Synopsis: Tanjiro sets out on the path of the Demon Slayer to save his sister and avenge his family!

In Taisho-era Japan, Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted boy who makes a living selling charcoal. But his peaceful life is shattered when a demon slaughters his entire family. His little sister Nezuko is the only survivor, but she has been transformed into a demon herself! Tanjiro sets out on a dangerous journey to find a way to return his sister to normal and destroy the demon who ruined his life.

Tanjiro and Tomioka confront Akaza, the Upper-Rank 3 demon. Against Akaza’s overwhelming strength, the two find themselves unable to do anything but defend themselves. With the situation looking grim, Tanjiro awakens to the Transparent World his father once told him about. Will this new knowledge allow Tanjiro to turn the tables and go on the offensive against Akaza?

Review:

his volume starts off amazing with Tanjiro and Giyu putting up a hell of a fight against Akaza and boy oh boy do both struggles and play off some awesome moves. On top of that, we get Akaza background, and as much as we hate him at this point, his background sure adds so many layers to make him a better character. Then we switch over to Doma and his fight with Kanao. It’s bitter and tough to watch but also great. Then my boy Inosuke comes in to help and things get even better. We also get more Ino background, hell yes.

This is a fantastic, fast-paced, brutal chapter with multiple characters facing near-death experiences while also pushing on. How the hell are we going to end this? I’m expecting to cry soon.

Everything at this point is so dark and twisty and INTENSE😳 The first big fight in this one did not end the way I expected but I absolutely loved how it did; we haven’t seen something quite like that before it was weirdly refreshing. Also these backstories?! They’re super interesting and add such a satisfying deepness.

The way I STAY feeling bad for demons because of their amazingly crazy, deeply written backstories 😭😭😭 It’s literally so insane how I can go from hating them to being on the verge of tears for them. The amount of character development packed within such a short time span is incredible.

I’m also living for this Kanao x Inosuke team-up and can’t wait to see them (hopefully!) take down that Upper-Rank baddie. I had a lowkey dramatic teary moment learning the Inosuke reveal😭 It HURT.

My rating: 5/5 stars.
