ARC Review: The Search for Synergy (The Talisman #1) by Brett Salter.

Synopsis: “The Search For Synergy” is the first book in The Talisman Series by author Brett Salter. It follows the exploits of two middle-school boys, Rome Lockheed and Julian Rider, as they transition from normal kids into epic warriors fighting for the existence of the Earth realm. Rome is secretly a fire dragon from the Den of Volcana placed under a spell which hides his true form. Julian is an oddball, up-and-coming knight with a case of the “try-hards”. Together, they perform an ancient pact which bonds their lives and souls forever. Under the tutelage and guidance of an eccentric, local librarian, Mr. Jones, the two learn of an impending invasion from an archaic evil desperate to invade from the other side of The Void.

Rome, a 14-year-old boy, finds himself searching for fire and peril all of a sudden. Julian, a classmate, notices him when he unintentionally ignites the neighbor’s tree in an unexpected way. Julian starts keeping a tight eye on Rome and quickly learns the truth, as he has suspected. Once they reach Synergy and gain their full power, Rome will be the dragon and Julian the knight. They are the offspring of ancient dragon and knight families. Together, they can defeat the evil forces that are about to invade the world.

This was super fun!! The concept is really unique and interesting. There will be some mild spoilers, but nothing too big. Rome is a sweet main character and I really liked following along with his growth and journey as a different creature. Throw in some Julian and you’ve got humor too! The two together were funny and dynamic, creating an enjoyable duo. I had so much fun reading their scenes!

“Dude, I’m not interested in holding you down. I’m interested in setting you free!”

– Julian Rider to Rome Lockheed”

The characters and circumstances they face kept me turning pages as Rome and Julian developed their abilities and fought evil creatures while learning more about their abilities and the history surrounding them. I finished reading this book in just three days because it gripped and held my attention and engaged me in the story and the characters’ lives. It was a while for me to read fantasy but this book reminded me why I used to solemnly read fantasy when I first started.

This book is a fun easy read that I recommend to middle-grade readers and up. Anyone who enjoys fantasy stories with unique characters and storylines that include battles and a bit of humor will enjoy The Search for Synergy by Brett Salter.

My rating: 4/5 stars.
