Oh, my my! I don’t know how I’m going to wait until October for the final book to come out and know how everything it’s going to end after the ending of this book, because I don’t think I’ll be able to function. That was such a great sequel that kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time, and I think I enjoyed it even more than the first installment.
First of all, I’m so loving the direction the story is taking. Whereas in the first installment the tone was quite light and focused on the romance with quite a few action packed scenes, in The Burning Shadow the atmosphere was much darker, and there were more action packed and fast paced scenes that were keeping me at the edge of my seat wanting to know what was going to happen, along with a few plot twists that made the story flow and the reader to be interested in the plot.
I think, though the romance took an important part in this installment, that it just wasn’t only that and it was more focused on the plot and the revelations, or that was the vibe I got while I was reading it. The very beginning was quite uneventful and not much was really happening besides some relationship drama, but as the story kept going the plot became more intricate and things started to be more intriguing, and I think that was the main reason why I felt it wasn’t as heavily romantic and fluffy as it was in the first installment.

I was so happy to see these characters again. They made quite a lasting impression on me while reading The Darkest Star, so seeing them again made my heart really warm. I have to say I found a few similarities between this sequel and some of the things that happened in the Lux series (especially when it came to the characters and their backstories and romantic relationships), but I still really enjoyed their arcs and interactions a lot.
Luc was one of my favorite characters in the Lux series, and I think that we got to see more about him and his personality in The Burning Shadow, along with his relationship with Evie, and seeing them evolved as the story went by. I also really enjoyed the dynamics between them and the conversations they had in this installment even more than in The Darkest Star, which was a bit surprising for me because second books in a series tend to be the weakest.
Also, I was pretty shocked after finishing the book, because it ended in a cliffhanger and in a high note that I needed to know what was going to happen. Of course, there were a few revelations that I guess I was expecting and didn’t shock me as much, but there were others that left me gasping for air.
“The faces in the photos were blurs to me as I blinked rapidly to clear my vision. The images of their shadows on the pavement hit me hard. That was how I felt. I was the shadow and not the person.”
Overall, this was such a stunning and incredible sequel. We got answers to some of the questions that were in the first book, but still there were some revelations that started other questions and left me wanting for more, and I cannot wait for the third book to come out and finally know how everything’s going to end, because honestly, Jennifer L. Armentrout’s books are just like candy.
